Membership

Membership is open to all organisations that provide volunteering support and development services within Greater London, and satisfy the Trustee Board that their objectives, powers, activities and methods are consistent with the objects of GLV.

There are five tiers of GLV membership.

Volunteer Centre:  recognising that volunteering doesn’t happen by itself and local hubs of expertise can help the hard to reach, the disadvantaged and reach local community groups.

Volunteer Development Agencies:  recognising that volunteering doesn’t happen by itself and specialist regional and national agencies can focus on the particular support needs of different parts of the community to benefit from volunteering

Stakeholders: Regional or national Volunteer-Involving Organisations (VIOs) :  recognising that large volunteering programmes often influence volunteer management practices, innovate around the roles of volunteers and engage large numbers of volunteers

Corporate and Public Sector:
recognising that volunteering programmes include employer-supported volunteering or supporting public services, often influencing volunteer practices, innovating around the roles of volunteers and potentially engaging large numbers of volunteers

Friends of GLV: recognising the important role that community activists and individuals make to developing and supporting volunteering, and often in informal volunteering roles

Membership Services

Advice and capacity building
Want to initiate a new volunteering project, or implement a strategy or policy related to volunteering? Chances are one of our members will have been there before. We can provide expert advice that will provide some of the best ways to engage with those who have most to benefit from volunteering.

With links to organisations working in volunteering across every London borough, and a dedicated team of Experts in Volunteering advisors, we can link you to the expertise you need. Whether it’s getting a new idea off the ground, or honing your existing work, GLV has the contacts to help you deliver outstanding volunteering support.

Fore more details of our consultancy services, see our Bespoke Services page.

Network Days
Greater London Volunteering provides excellent opportunities to network with other Volunteer Development Agencies in London. We run quarterly a Network Day. Free of charge to members, these days offer both excellent training and development opportunities, as well as the chance to find out what everyone else is up to around London.

GLV focuses Network Day discussions on the subjects our members tell us are of interest to them. Recent Network Days have covered issues such as the effect of the economic downturn on members; making employer supported volunteering work; and income generation for a sustainable network .

Ebulletin
GLV provides a monthly ebulletin to all members, giving a brief on GLV’s activities, as well as updates on volunteering policy; new resources; funding; training opportunities (many of them free), and events. Members tell us that being kept updated on what’s happening across London and the UK is invaluable .

Publicity for your organisation
This website is London’s central source of information on volunteering activity. Members are listed in the GLV Membership Directory 2010, promoting your organisation as a source of information, advice and guidance to volunteers. GLV also runs the Experts in Volunteering website, www.expertsinvolunteering.org.uk, which further supports the services and activities of our members. And you can search for, or link your volunteer-involving events on our www.eventvolunteers.org.uk page.

Big Issue Forums
At least twice a year, all members are invited to a Big Issue Day, focusing on one key issue identified by members as requiring particular attention . These provide a valuable chance to share concerns and opinions, and to catch up with colleagues in the sector over lunch.

Representation and Consultation
GLV lobbies for our members at both national and regional levels. We act as the regional point of communication between volunteering infrastructure and decision makers. We communicate the needs of our members to strategic bodies, including regional, central government and regional non-governmental bodies, advocating for the value of our membership’s services. GLV meets frequently with decision-makers, informing them on the need for support and investment for a strong volunteering sector and representing the views of our members.

Our strategic links and partners include:
ChangeUp London Regional Consortium * England Volunteering Development Council * Greater London Authority (GLA) * LOCOG and 2012 delivery agents * London Development Agency (LDA) * London Museums Hub *London Voluntary Service Council (LVSC) * London Volunteering Group * Mentoring and Befriending Foundation (London) * Sports England and ProActive partnerships (Subregional Sports and Physical Activities Partnerships) * The Big Opportunity * Volunteering England * TimeBank * YouthNet * Office of the Third Sector * London Funders

GLV sits on the national England Volunteering Development Council (EVDC), the London Regional Consortium for ChangeUp and LOCOG’s Changing Places management group. GLV chairs and facilitates a regional strategic forum – the Stakeholders’ Volunteering Forum, which feeds into both the EVDC and ChangeUp – and the Mayor of London’s Volunteering London group, which focuses on the volunteering legacy from London 2012.

Supporting collaboration
GLV’s innovative Peer Buddying project links up people who work with volunteers across different boroughs to facilitate problem-solving, ideas sharing and support. Our unique knowledge of who’s who in the London volunteering sector allows us to facilitate strategic partnerships for shared learning and planning; and our membership benefits from the cross-borough working relationships which GLV fosters.
